Interscolastic Equestrian Association

The MISSION of the IEA is to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools to equestrian sports and to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction.

The IEA PURPOSE is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition and education on matters related to equestrian sport at the middle and secondary school levels (primarily ages 11 through 19).

• The IEA Horsemanship Program is open to any youth in Grades 4-12 who is either a Junior Contributing Member, or Rider Member*
• Members who participate in the program will compete in nine quizzes on a variety of topics. Each quiz will be available the first of each month, October through May. When a participant signs up through the IEA Horsemanship Page they will recieve an email with all quizzes for months that they may have missed.
• On June 1st each participant will recieve a Final Quiz. Participants who complete all nine quizzes and recieve 75% or better on the Final Quiz will recieve a commemorative shirt, as well as a certificate of completion.

*Become a Junior Contributing Member for $35. Rider Members can participate in the IEA Horsemanship Program for a $15 fee (in addition to their membership).

The unique aspect of the competitions, both at the local and national level, is that none of the riders will supply their own horses or tack. Instead, the host team arranges for the horses and equipment. Since the horse is new to the rider, the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation. All disciplines offer a variety of ability levels from beginner through advanced. The IEA has set guidelines for the placement of new riders entering the IEA to allow for the unique program format of riding an unfamiliar horse.

An IEA rider’s journey starts with the desire to be part of a team. Whether the team is the partnership between rider and horse or the team that consists of old and new friends at the barn, an IEA rider has the opportunity to develop competitive riding skills, make lasting memories, and further their riding ability in college and beyond.

And the best part is, IEA riders do not need to own a horse or tack to participate – making it an affordable way to participate in equestrian sport.

About the IEA Hunt Seat Program:

• Open to riders in grades 4-12.
• Horse and tack assembled for all competitions by Host Team(s).
• 2 Hunt Seat Classes Offered – Equitation on the Flat and Over Fences.
• 4 Ability Levels for Equitation on the Flat: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Open.
• Flat classes may include patterns for upper levels.
• 3 Ability Levels for Over Fences: Novice, Intermediate and Open.
• 4th or 5th grade riders can now be POINT RIDERS on middle school (Futures) teams and compete in any eligible division level.
• Over fences classes include cross-rails, 2’ and 2’6” jumps.
• ASTM/SEI Helmets are mandatory for all Hunt Seat riders.
• Zone and National Scholarship Awards available.
• Competition season 2024-25: August 1 – April 30.
• Nationals TBD sometime in end of April

PHF pricing:

• Semester fee: $300 ( does not include IEA membership fee)
• IEA show entry fees and coaching: $525-750 depending on division the rider shows in.
• Team practice: $1440 paid in 4 equal payments. Due 7/15/24, 9/25/24, 11/25/24, & 1/25/25

Commitment from parent and rider

• Be available for weekly lessons
• Must be available for 5 shows
• Be available to help run 2 home horse shows a season
• Collect fundraising money with business card ads or raffle prizes
• Be a team player and come to regional and zone finals even if you don’t make it individually or the team.
